Pangilinan's call to curb ticket scalping has gained momentum, as the
Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Consumer Protection Group expressed
support for his proposal for a national law against scalpers.
Following complaints from
concertgoers, the DTI has also pledged to take action against scalpers at the
upcoming 2NE1 concert on November 16. During a recent meeting with Pangilinan,
the DTI’s Consumer Protection Group head, Assistant Secretary Agaton Uvero,
revealed that hundreds of complaints had been filed online regarding ticket
sales for Olivia Rodrigo’s recent Manila concert. The ticketing company
attributed the issues to a system glitch, which reportedly allowed resellers to
purchase a high volume of tickets that were later resold at inflated prices—up
to P23,000, compared to Rodrigo’s intended flat rate of P1,500.
“We’re encouraged by DTI’s support and their
commitment to prevent further exploitation of concert-goers. This is a critical
step in ensuring fairness and protecting Filipino fans from scalpers who
disrupt the market,” the former senator said. Pangilinan commended consumers
who have formally filed their complaints with the DTI. “Holding companies to
account for their products and services is part of the process that would
ensure better products and services for the public, for all of us consumers,”
he said.
In light of the recent
controversy, Pangilinan emphasized the need for national legislation on
scalping, particularly in the digital age where bots and automated resellers
have become a widespread problem. “While local ordinances are helpful, we need
a national anti-scalping law to ensure consistency and effective action,” he
added.
As anticipation builds for the 2NE1 concert, the involvement of government authorities offers fans hope for a smoother and more transparent ticketing process. Pangilinan remains hopeful that with more consumer-rights action, combined with legislation, will mark the beginning of a fairer experience for Filipino fans and concert-goers,
